While most media interview opportunities are great for building your business by giving you more exposure, there are two media interview situations where you can actually hurt your business. If you are doing your own publicity, you must be aware of these situations so you can avoid them.
The first situation where you can be hurt in an interview is where you would be interviewed by a “hostile” reporter or show host. In this case, the interviewer wants to “skewer” you for the sake of their audience. They want to use you or your company as an example of what they are trying to “expose”.
Check out who is interviewing you and why, well in advance of the interview and if you sense it is for a “hostile” interview, don’t do it. Very little good can come out of this kind of an interview for you.
The second interview situation to avoid is where you do your own damage to yourself during the interview. Here you basically “blow it” on your own. You come across unprepared, you don’t handle the questions well, you get into topics you should avoid, and so on.
So you need to have your act together before doing an interview. Make sure you are totally prepared for anything related to your topic; you have practiced you answers, etc. Also study previous work by the interviewer so you know what style to expect and be ready to deal with it in a favorable way.
It take practice to handle interviews well, so that is why I have included four one on one phone coaching sessions with my media pitch program quickfamesystem.com. You will ace every interview once you start to use it.
